The El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Film Festival returns for its 17th year July 18-28, 2024 in and around the historic Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Centre in downtown El Paso, TX. It was started by the El Paso Community Foundation in 2008 as a special project to bring movies back to the restored Plaza Theatre. The Community Foundation purchased 35mm and state-of-the-art 2K digital projection equipment (upgraded to 4K in 2018) for the atmospheric theater, which opened in 1930, closed in the early ’80s, and was restored for $42 million in 2006 in a joint partnership between the City of El Paso and the Community Foundation. In its first 16 years, the Plaza Classic has shown more than 1,000 classic and locally made movies, attracted more than 500,000 spectators, and hosted special guests including Al Pacino, Debbie Reynolds, Rita Moreno, Sam Elliott, Katharine Ross, Richard Dreyfuss, F. Murray Abraham, Don Bluth, Shirley Jones, Edward James Olmos, Helen Hunt, Kathleen Turner, and Cindy Williams.
