The Center was created by sixteen concerned El Pasoans which included the District Attorney, County Attorney, Hospital Administrators, Clergymen, Teachers, and Local Businessmen seeing children victimized by severe physical and/or sexual abuse failing through judicial cracks. The Center opened on December 19, 1996.
The Hispanic Health Research Center was established at the Brownsville campus of the UTHealth School of Public Health in 2003 through funding from the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities at the National Institutes of Health. We identify the key risk factors for obesity and diabetes and their complications in Americans of Mexican descent living in the Lower Rio Grande Valley.
NAMI Texas's role as an advocacy organization grew from the need of its members - consumers and families - to effect a positive change in the response of society, government and business to an individual with a mental illness.
