Comics and Graphic Novels: Transmountain Library: Awards and Publishers

The Hugo process is as follows:

During January-March each year members of the Worldcon are each allowed to nominate up to five people or works from the previous year in fifteen categories.
In early April a shortlist is announced of five finalists in each category and a final ballot is sent to members of the Worldcon that year.
The members of the current Worldcon cast a final ballot, with balloting ending around sometime in July (it depends on exactly when Worldcon is that year.) The ballot is a preferential ballot which allows the voters to rank all nominees.
At Worldcon the winners are announced at the Hugo Ceremony and receive a special trophy.

Our History

Believing that all people have the ability to create, and that visual artistic expression is a viable means to enhance personal identity and growth, Florence Ludins-Katz and Elias Katz founded Creativity Explored in 1983. Our second studio site was opened in 1995 to provide adults with severe disabilities an opportunity to create visual art.

People have been able to view and purchase art from our studios since Creativity Explored’s inception. Our on-site gallery opened in 2001 providing the public the opportunity to view work exhibited in a professional setting. Gallery programming now includes six diverse exhibitions per year with more than 15,000 people visiting the gallery and studio annually. Readers of the SF Weekly and Bay Guardian have consistently voted Creativity Explored Best Art Gallery in the Bay Area.

Many Creativity Explored studio artists have developed meaningful arts practices and are now becoming increasingly recognized for their contributions to the contemporary art world. In addition to participating in numerous group exhibitions in the Bay Area, Creativity Explored artists have had one-person gallery shows in New Zealand and Australia. Several artists’ work has been included in international group exhibitions, as well as in commercial and nonprofit venues across the nation. Most recently, nine Creativity Explored artists were exhibited in UC Berkeley Art Museum’s traveling group exhibition, Create, which was selected as one of San Francisco Chronicle Art Critic Kenneth Baker’s top ten exhibits in 2011.

Creativity Explored’s gallery operation continues to expand, encompassing a growing array of art products (notecards, books, and t-shirts) and our popular online web store. In addition, our related Art Services and Licensing Programs have expanded studio artists’ commercial success and visibility within retail and residential development markets.

With a spirit of openness and transparency, Creativity Explored recognizes that collaboration will create new and exciting opportunities for artists with developmental disabilities, both nationally and internationally, and will mutually benefit partnering organizations.

Note: No daily or weekly newspaper strips were included here, so apologies to outstanding works like Peanuts, Doonesbury, Calvin and Hobbes, Dick Tracy, Life in Hell, anything by Saul Steinberg, and Krazy Kat (still the Beatles of newspaper comics). Also, fanpersons, we’re aware that chances are your favorite title is not on here; you’ll undoubtledly hate the ranking order; and you’ll find some selections idiosyncratic at best and outrageous at worst. But since those of us who love comics also love nothing more than complaining about comics, you’re welcome.
