  • Primary Source is the short story you read.

  • You may include an image or two.

Analysis

  • Your essay will be an interpretation of the work and your argument about it based on the text.
  • Analyze one element of one of the readings on the list.
    • For example:  Analyze the setting, characters, plot, literary devices, point of view, language, or theme(s).

Example Thesis Statements

  • In "A Worn Path," Eudora Welty creates a fictional character in Phoenix Jackson whose detrmination, faith, and cunning illustrate the indomitable human spirit.
  • A close look at many details in Kate Chopin's "The Story of an Hour" reveals how language, institutions, and expected demeanor suppress the natural desires and aspirations of women.

  3. Brainstorm your argument.
  4. Formulate a question and thesis statement.
