About the Historical Markers Project

Historical Markers Project -- 2002-2004

El Paso Community College / National Endowment for the Humanities

The El Paso Community College Historical Markers Project was conducted under the direction of Dr. George D. Torok, History Professor at the Valle Verde Campus, from 2002 to 2004 in cooperation with the EPCC Honors Program, the El Paso Community Foundation, and the El Paso County Historical Commission. Funding for the project came from a National Endowment for the Humanities grant and various college resources.

Twenty-five EPCC students surveyed thirty-three historic sites in the El Paso area, compiled research materials, prepared research packets, conducted interviews, documented, and prepared summary materials. Applications were forwarded to the El Paso Community Foundation, El Paso County Historical Commission, and the Texas Historical Commission

Ten sites under study are being developed as a Mexican Revolution Trail through the El Paso area. EPCC students worked with researchers David Romo, Fred Morales, the office of Senator Eliot Shapleigh, and the El Paso Community Foundation.

Some sites were featured on Dr. Torok’s television series Along the Rio Grande, broadcast in El Paso, Texas and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Research materials for this project are being archived at the EPCC Northwest Campus Library under the direction of Ms. Monica Wong, in conjunction with the ongoing Borderlands project.

The previous website of research materials, illustrations, summaries, internet links, Along the Rio Grande productions, and marker texts was envisioned and developed by EPCC student Christos Panagiotopoulos.  It has been modified in appearance but not content by Rachel Murphree, 2012.
