Oedipus and the Sphinx

Oedipus encounters a Sphinx on his way to Thebes.  The Sphinx would pose a riddle to all persons travelling to Thebes. If unable to answer the riddle, the Sphinx would kill them.  Oedipus was the first to answer her riddle correctly.  She was so distraught she threw herself into the sea.
