ENGL 1301 - Composition I (Gloria Estrada): Get Ready to Search

Last Question: What Types of Resources Can You Use?

Now that you have chosen a topic, found background information on it, and created a keyword list, you are ready to search.

Before you start looking for resources, however, make sure you find out what type of sources your instructor wants you to use.

Can you use:

  • Books
  • e-Books
  • Magazines
  • Journals
  • Newspapers
  • Websites

Are there other restrictions such as:

  • The age of the resource.
  • The type of websites you can use. (Most instructors will not accept Wikipedia as a resource).
  • Number of resources you need to use.

Find out this information before you begin to search, so that the librarians can help you get started and you don't use a resource that you are not supposed to use.

If you are not sure what type of sources you can use, ask your instructor or read your syllabus.
